Concept-Based Inquiry Retreat
Join Rachel French in Portugal October 7th-11th, 2019

5 Days of Learning, Thinking and Implementing New Ideas
If you have been seeking practical ideas and strategies to translate Concept-Based Inquiry from theory to powerful classroom practice, this workshop is for you!

You become more intentional about unit design transforming your teaching so that your students take ownership of the thinking and build understanding for themselves.

By the end of the 5-days, you will leave with a bank of strategies that can be implemented in your classroom, working on your own unit design so that you can immediately put your new learning into action.

The work you will be doing on unit design along with Rachel and Carla's model of Concept-Based Inquiry will have you teaching with great clarity and better results than ever before.
Learn to engage students emotionally and intellectually in the unit, connecting to their own experiences and prior knowledge so that they feel invested in the inquiry and want to find out more.
Activate and assess prior knowledge to address misconceptions that typically interfere with new learning.
Become intentional about building concept formation strategies early in the unit to prepare students for success.
Carefully consider the case-studies and the scope for student choice that is appropriate for your unit so that students build agency, see patterns, and make connections.
Extend your thinking around the different ways that students can investigate to create richer, more powerful learning experiences.
Reduce your student's cognitive load by providing clear structures for organizing information so that students can make connections and form generalizations.
Build your own bank for strategies to scaffold student's thinking so that they are empowered to form understandings for themselves.
Learn to intentionally provide opportunities for learning transfer so that students can test and justify the validity of their thinking and apply to understand to new situations!

Testimonials From Past Participants...

Gioia Morasch

"The most value part of this retreat has been Rachel's ability to break down the phases of the Concept-Based Inquiry model.  That has been a huge take away. It has made a lot of sense in terms of helping student inductively arrive at generalizations on their own".

Marco Meireles

"The model of Concept-Based Inquiry provided me with a structure of thought and made all of the strategies that I plan much more intentional. It validated the strategies use so far and opened a whole menu of new strategies which will help me to diversify the way that I teach".

Miranda Rose

"Building a unit has been really interesting to see the bridge between Concept-Based Learning and Inquiry Learning with the work that  Rachel and Carla have done to connect those.  It was great getting our feet wet in trying it out to see how they can apply to our units.

It has been a really powerful week!"

Your Questions Answered...
What is included at the retreat?
You will be provided with a free copy of 'Concept-Based Curriculum and Instruction for the Thinking Classroom' by Erickson, Lanning and French and 'Concept-Based Inquiry in Action' by Marschall and French.

We'll be providing morning tea and lunch and continuous tea and coffee.

Additionally, dinner on Thursday night is included at one of Porto's best restaurants Graham's Port Wine Lodge - Vinum.

What do I need to bring?
You will need to bring a laptop computer with access to google drive. You will spend a significant amount to time working on designing your own unit so it would be difficult to do this from a phone or tablet without a keyboard.

Please make sure you have access to your curriculum documents and unit planners for the units you are currently teaching (if you can access them online you do not need to bring printed copies).

Will the retreat be available through a live stream?
No - this event is designed for people to be physically in the room and will not be recorded or available outside of the event.

 Where can I stay?
There are lots of different accommodation options around the Porto; however, we recommend that you book as soon as possible, as accommodation is often sold out at this time of year.
SeaPorto Hotel - Av. Dom Afonso Henriques 354 Matosinhos from €90 per night
Bessa Hotel - R. Dr. Marques de Carvalho 111 Porto from €145 per night

You will receive further details and links to book any of these hotels as soon as you complete the registration.
