Become an Erickson and Lanning CBCI Certified Trainer to Lead Proffessional Learning and Curriculum Development
The Dr. Erickson and Dr. Lanning Certification Institute is designed to prepare you with the knowledge, skills and understanding to lead workshops and support schools with cutting-edge Concept-Based Curriculum design.

We are now accepting applications for this year's cohort!
  • Develop a deep understanding of Concept-Based Curriculum and Instruction so that you are able to accurately, fluently, and confidently explain the principles to others.   
  • ​​Practice crafting clear generalizations or conceptual understandings so you can confidently lead curriculum design. 
  • ​Improve your coaching skills so that you can offer clarity in curriculum design and unit writing.  
  • ​​Participate in a series of Concept-Based lessons so you can experience the power of scaffolding thinking to support understanding. 
  • ​Learn the difference between assessments of facts and skills versus assessments of conceptual understanding so you can raise the bar for students.
 Dates for the next Certification Institute:
Our 2021-2022 Erickson and Lanning CBCI Trainer Certification will be a nine-month ONLINE program that begins September 4th, 2021.

Application Criteria:
To apply, schedule a 30-minute application interview with Rachel French. There are a few criteria for educators to participate in the CBCI Trainer Certification Institute, as follows.
 You must be a qualified teacher with three or more years teaching experience (K-12).
 You must  have a confident presentation style and the ability to engage an audience.
 Although you do not need to be a native English speaker, you must be fluent in both written and spoken English.

Dr. Lois A. Lanning
Concept-Based Curriculum and Instruction (CBCI) is found in schools around the world. Through decades of writing numerous books (individually and together) and offering professional development workshops, Dr. Lynn Erickson and Dr. Lois Lanning have helped educators across the globe learn the tenets of CBCI.

As a Curriculum Director, Lynn initially worked in a school district to change the curriculum model. She wrote her first book in 1995 based on her work in the school district and titled it Stirring the Head, Heart and Soul: Redefining Curriculum and Instruction. In this book, she developed the Structure of Knowledge Model to show the relationships among facts, concepts, generalizations, principles and theories. Lynn was joined in 1996 by Lois Lanning and they have been associates in the work since that time. Lois developed the Structure of Process to complement Lynn's model.

Lynn (from Washington) and Lois (from Massachusetts) are now retired and have passed the leadership of the Certification Institute to Rachel French and Tiffanee Brown. 
Meet Our Program Facilitators

Rachel French  
Presenter and Institute Director
Rachel French, MA Ed, is a certified Independent Concept-Based consultant, presenter and trainer with Dr. Lynn Erickson and Dr. Lois Lanning. She is the Director of Professional Learning International (PLI), founded to support international schools in accessing leading professional development. 

Rachel has traveled around the world presenting and consulting with schools in Europe, Africa, Asia and North America. She loves to model lessons and support schools with curriculum design.

Rachel French, Dr. Lynn Erickson, and Dr. Lois Lanning co-authored the second edition of Concept-Based Curriculum and Instruction for the Thinking Classroom published by Corwin in February 2017.

Rachel's second book and video series co-authored with Carla Marschall, Concept-Based Inquiry in Action, was published by Cowin in July 2018. Rachel and Carla spent three years filming examples of Concept-Based Inquiry in classrooms around the world as support material for their book.

Rachel now runs live workshops and online courses to prepare educators to apply the Concept-Based approach at their schools.

Rachel and her husband live in a small town in New Zealand with their three young children, a couple of chickens and a sheep.

Tiffanee Brown  
Presenter and ELA Specialist
Tiffanee Brown is an experienced Concept-Based educator and a Dr. Lynn Erickson and Dr. Lois Lanning Concept-Based Curriculum and Instruction Presenter and Trainer. She facilitates professional learning, collaborates with school systems at both the regional and international levels, and serves as a thought-partner for teachers around the world.

Holding National Board Certification in English language arts and a MS in Special Education, Tiffanee is an endorsed literacy, social studies, and special education teacher with a deep understanding of what it takes to bring Concept-Based learning to life in the classroom.

Tiffanee engages educators and school systems in live and virtual professional learning opportunities that offer practical resources, reflection, and hands-on learning engagements gained through her own experience as a Concept-Based educator and curriculum leader.

In addition to publishing numerous articles and Concept-Based Literacy resources, Tiffanee and Dr. Lois Lanning co-authored Concept-Based Literacy Lessons: Designing Learning To Ignite Understanding and Transfer, published by Corwin in February 2019.

Residing in Washington State, Tiffanee, her husband, and two children enjoy all the Pacific Northwest has to offer from the mountains to the sea.
Throughout your program, you will also work with four Subject Area Specialists, who will prepare you to guide educators in CBCI across a range of disciplines.
Your Time Commitment for the Online CBCI Trainer Certification Institute
We have broken the CBCI Trainer Certification Institute material into four separate, consecutive courses that focus on different aspects of the Concept-Based approach and how to guide teachers in applying it to different disciplines.

During each of these online courses, you will gain access to new video modules each week. You can expect to spend about 2 hours per week on on the modules and readings

Because the video modules are self-paced, if you have a particularly busy week you will be able to catch up the following week. 

On most Saturdays, you will join us and all the other participants for 1-2 hour coaching calls over Zoom, where we will answer questions and you will work collaboratively in small groups. 

Because the Certification Institute brings together participants from all over the world, we will offer each Zoom call at two different times on Saturdays to accommodate your time zones.

As our Course Facilitators and Subject Specialists are also spread across the globe, the exact time of each call may vary depending on who is leading it. 

You could think about it a little like committing to a weekend sport for a school year. Your “games” (aka Zoom calls) will be at different times from week to week, but you will have a schedule in advance so you can make plans. 

We understand that you may not be able to join every call, some of the calls are optional and others are required.  For the calls when attendance is required we recognize that from time to time you may have other commitments so a 90% attendance requirement for these sessions. 

We will take two vacation breaks during the year, from mid-December to early January, and then again in the first half of April. We have done our best to align these with common school holiday breaks around the world.

Two Types of Certification and Licensing 
If your school or organization sponsors you by paying more than 50% of your participation fee for the Certification Institute, then the you will be certified and licensed to train within the sponsoring school or organization only. 

If you fund the Certification Institute yourself or your school or organization pays less than 50% of the fee, you will be certified and licensed to train as an independent consultant. You will be able to advertise yourself as an independent consultant and could present at conferences and accept national and international requests to train on Concept-Based Curriculum and Instruction, setting your own fee structure. 

You will not be required to pay any fees to Dr. Lynn Erickson, Dr. Lois Lanning or Professional Learning International following the training. 

Whether school sponsored or independent, once certified you may advertise yourself as an "H. Lynn Erickson and Lois A. Lanning Certified Trainer In Concept-Based Curriculum & Instruction" and will be licensed to use all of Lynn Erickson and Lois Lanning's PowerPoint slides with their original copyright notice. Only if you have paid individually, or with the “shared cost” option, will you be licensed to train for fees outside your sponsoring agency.

What does the certification fee include?
The 6900 Euro Investment includes:

Is the Erickson and Lanning CBCI Trainer Certification also offered as an 8-day, face-to-face training program next year, like it was before?
Being able to come together safely as a large, international group remains uncertain, so we only plan to run the Online Certification Institute in 2021. We hope to offer the 8-day, face-to-face training program again in mid-2022. 

Will I need a stable internet connection?
Yes, viewing the online courses and participating in the group coaching calls does require a stable internet connection. 

What is the weekly time commitment? 
You can expect to spend 2-3 hours a week on the self-paced video modules, unit planning and readings and 1-2 hours participanting in the Zoom coaching calls and lessons.

What if I can't make the dates above?
The event is offered once each year. In late September 2021, applications will open for the 2022 event in the Netherlands.

We have a group of 40-50 educators that we would like certified. Is it possible to host a Certification Institute?
