--- Invite to Participate in Online Workshop with Dr. Lynn Erickson, Dr. Lois Lanning, & Rachel French ---

Are you Ready to Learn From Concept-Based Curriculum Experts, Dr. Lynn Erickson and Dr. Lois Lanning?

Unique opportunity to engage with the work of these Concept-Based pioneers!

From The Desk Of Rachel French
Greytown, New Zealand

Dear Fellow Educator,

I am Rachel French, author, coach, and certified Concept-Based Inquiry trainer and presenter. I have been personally mentored by Dr. Lynn Erickson and Dr. Lois Lanning for the past nine years.

Recently, I was given the opportunity to work with them directly, and co-author the second edition of Concept-Based Curriculum and Instruction for the Thinking Classroom, and am now trusted to lead their Certification Institute

I founded Professional Learning International to support international schools and educators in accessing leading professional development opportunities.

With increasing demand, we have now specialized in Concept-Based Curriculum and Instruction workshops.

I am so excited to share with you our most recent opportunity with special guests...

Sadly, Dr. Lynn Erickson and Dr. Lois Lanning,  legends in the field of Concept-Based Curriculum, have both officially retired from presenting and consulting.

HOWEVER!

Before they did, I convinced them to record an online workshop, just for you, so that you wouldn’t miss out on this incredible opportunity to learn directly from them!

(While they will no longer be leading international workshops, they will still attend their exclusive annual ‘Dr. Lynn Erickson and Dr. Lois Lanning Concept-Based Curriculum Certification Institute.’ )

This online workshop is now your only other opportunity to learn directly from them.

If you are excited about enhancing your understanding of Concept-Based Curriculum and Instruction, and want to develop a bank of teaching strategies to promote understanding…

Then this revolutionary online workshop is for you!

Come and join our special guests Lynn and Lois, as I, Rachel French, host this special online workshop.

Our next intake is on February 1st, 2021.

H. Lynn Erickson, Ed. D., an independent consultant assisting schools with concept-based curriculum design and construction, has worked extensively over the past 20 years with K-12 teachers on the design of nationally and regionally aligned curriculum.

Lynn has authored numerous books on the topic and is an internationally recognized presenter in teaching for deep understanding.

Lois Lanning, Ph.D., is also an independent education consultant who has dedicated her time to working with districts at the state, national and international levels in the areas of literacy and Concept-Based Curriculum Design.

Lois has written numerous professional articles, created countless teacher resources, and has also authored several books and received many awards and recognitions.

This is your final chance to learn from Dr. Lynn Erickson and Dr. Lois Lanning, the true experts in this field

But before I tell you more about it …
  • If your preferred pedagogy is to lecture at your students
  • If you hate unit design and you sit in collaborative planning meetings catching up on marking or checking Facebook
  • If you teach the same units, in the same way, every year...
... then this online workshop is not for you!

We have designed this workshop for educators who are life-long learners and believe in their students' capacity to think and build understanding.

As Dr. Lynn Erickson says, “Thinking classrooms require thinking teachers.”

If this is something that you identify with, read on.

It’s time to dig deeper...
Exactly what you’ll experience during the Online Workshop
Are you tired of participating in online workshops that are filled with lists of readings and follow-up activities that feel like ‘busy work’?

Have you ever given ‘feedback’ to your workshop peers, just to meet the course requirements?

Have you ever started an online workshop and felt it was such a waste of time that you never finished it?

Do you feel stressed about missing time in the classroom to complete lengthy professional development courses that may not actually benefit your students?

This Online Workshop will be very different from the typical professional development workshop experiences, which research shows have very little impact on teaching practices…

Why?

Over a six-week period, beginning on February 1st, 2021, you will have the opportunity to journey through five unique online modules that will provide you with a strong foundational understanding of a Concept-Based Unit.

You will learn…

  • Why Concept-Based Curriculum and Instruction is more effective than traditional curricula
  • How knowledge and process are structured, so you can use these structures to improve academic performance
  • How to write generalizations and scaffold student thinking so you can transfer learning to unique contexts
  • How to get the best out of the planning and design process in order to be clear about what you want your students to know, understand and be able to do
  • How to harness the power of Concept-Based Curriculum and Instruction, shifting the way you think about education
  • The importance of organizing information to reduce your students’ cognitive load
  • How to use more effective questioning techniques to promote student agency to empower learners to see patterns and make connections
PLUS!

You will be designing your own Concept-Based unit, applying your newly acquired skills and knowledge to the context of your own school or classroom environment.

Sounds interesting, right?
 This is powerful stuff...
Before I attended Dr. Lynn Erickson and Dr. Lois Lanning’s workshop, I thought I understood the role of concepts in the curriculum.

Looking back now, I realize I was only dealing with concepts at the surface level and I wasn’t aware that I did so much of the thinking for my students

I was selling my students short by only working toward one conceptual understanding in a unit.

That was before Lynn and Lois taught me how to harness my students potential!

Our students are capable of so much more than we give them credit for!

Dr. Erickson and Dr. Lanning changed the way I thought about education. After I taught my first Concept-Based lesson, there was no turning back!

Each time I adopted a Concept-Based approach in my own classroom, I was blown away by my students’ ability to articulate big ideas for themselves.

If you take action and make the most of your time learning from Lynn and Lois…
You will see the power this model has in your classroom…

Are you ready to be blown away by what your students are capable of when you stop telling them the big idea, central idea, or statement of inquiry?

It is time we let the students do the thinking for themselves...

That is true learner agency!

So, if you are interested in harnessing the power of Concept-Based Curriculum and Instruction in your school or classroom ...

Let me tell you about…
Why I convinced Lynn and Lois to create this workshop for you...
When online workshops were first created, they were often really boring. They involved exhaustive reading lists and were filled with assignments and tasks that often felt like time fillers.

Changes in technology have allowed us to interact in new ways that are more engaging and conducive to meaningful collaboration

Ever since I started Professional Learning International, I’ve had emails from people just like you wanting an opportunity to learn from Lynn and Lois in an online format.

Attending our face-to-face workshops takes time and resources, and I wanted to provide an opportunity to learn from Lynn and Lois to more teachers.

When I heard that they were retiring, I knew I had to act fast.

Lynn and Lois have worked with thousands of teachers all over the world to build an understanding of the power of a Concept-Based Curriculum.

I feel compelled to share this training with as many teachers as possible, as it has the potential to truly shift the way you think about education.

This opportunity will be very different from any online workshop that you may have done before...

Here’s what is meant by that...

Our goal for the Online Workshop is to set you up for success and guide you through the process of designing a Concept-Based unit that you can immediately implement in your classroom or school context, and see this meaningful action occur in your own practice.

I have thought long and hard about the format of this workshop and how to best facilitate your learning.

I finally settled on a series of engaging components which are designed to work together seamlessly, providing you with maximum support and the confidence to implement this into your practice.

The workshop is structured into five modules.

These modules are filled with videos of Lynn and Lois breaking down Concept-Based Curriculum and Instruction, and it is through these videos that you will build your foundational knowledge and learn to clearly articulate powerful conceptual understandings.

PLUS!

As a certified Concept-Based Curriculum and Instruction trainer, I will personally be there  to provide you with support in our weekly one-hour group coaching calls

These calls provide you with the opportunity to clarify understandings, get feedback on your design process, and learn from questions other participants are asking.

You will also have ongoing lifetime access to a Facebook group which includes all members from this online workshop, so you can continue to foster long-term professional relationships, share ideas and support each other in your professional learning journey.

AND

Once you have completed the workshop, I genuinely want to ensure that your learning doesn’t go to waste...

Your one-on-one private coaching call

With your completed Concept-Based unit in hand, you and I will have a 45-minute one-on-one private coaching call to review your planning and work together on ensuring you are ready to put your learning into action

BUT…

This coaching call will not be available to everyone.

To unlock a spot in my calendar, you must be willing to put in the work, complete your unit design, and have a genuine desire to improve your practice.

If this is not you, and you do not wish to unlock the true potential of your students, then I’m afraid this workshop is not the right one for you at this time.

Are you ready to hear about the other awesome extra you will receive when you sign up for this Online Workshop?

We know teachers LOVE free resources...
So...you will receive a free e-book copy of the book I co-authored with Lynn and Lois:

'Concept-Based Curriculum and Instruction for the Thinking Classroom'
By H. Lynn Erickson, Lois A. Lanning and Rachel French
Published by Corwin, 2017

Plus we have designed the study modules around each chapter to ensure you are able to get the most out of your reading.

Let's break down these five modules
This online workshop was created specifically for teachers, curriculum coordinators, and school leaders who are ready to deepen their understanding of Concept-Based Curriculum and Instruction...

 AND

…are prepared to implement their learning to see students full potential with a Concept-Based approach.

Is that you?

Over the course of this workshop, you will establish a learning community that will help foster your growth and challenge your thinking.

Your new professional learning community will support you as you take action in your classroom or school.

Module One: Why Concept-Based Curriculum and Instruction?
From the moment you begin this course, the effectiveness and power of Concept-Based Curriculum and Instruction will begin to present itself to you.

You will learn how a three-dimensional model is much more effective in fostering a thinking classroom than a two-dimensional model.

You will also understand how knowledge and process are structured, and how we can use these structures to focus teaching and learning in our classroom to significantly improve the academic performance of all students.

It is important to reflect on your own Concept-Based journey as you work through this introductory module to make connections to your current practice.

This first module concludes with a deep dive into Dr. Lynn Erickson’s Structure of Knowledge and Dr. Lois Lanning’s Structure of Process. Here you will learn how facts and skills provide the foundation for building conceptual understanding.
Module Two: Understanding Concepts and Crafting Generalizations
When we as teachers are not clear about what we want our students to know, understand, and do, how can we expect them to succeed?

Clear articulation of Conceptual Understandings is key to learning transfer!

I am not going to lie to you...

Initially, it can be challenging to clearly articulate the conceptual understanding, but it is worth it!

This module answers the question, “what is a concept?” You will develop shared understandings that may challenge your current thinking, so don’t hold back!

Lois will teach you how to write your own generalizations, and Lynn will demonstrate how to scaffold thinking to ensure you can clearly articulate your ideas.

To get the most out of this experience, you will need to be actively participating. Get out your pen and paper and get ready to craft your own powerful generalizations!

Module Three: Planning your Concept-Based Unit
By the third module, you are now starting to plan your own unit

Remember, in order to really learn from the content in this course, it will be beneficial if you are planning an actual unit that you intend to teach.

Make sure you take advantage of the Facebook community and live calls to get feedback on your generalizations. Or, just ask for help if you are stuck!

Before you move on to the next module you are going to make sure that you have..
  • Developed your strong unit title, providing a clear focus for the study and the centering context;
  • Selected a conceptual lens, giving the unit focus and depth and ensuring synergistic thinking within the brain;
  • Completed your unit web which is an overview of the unit’s topics and concept; and
  • You have your 5-9 generalizations for the unit that students must understand conceptually.
Because we know that life can get busy, the fourth week of the course is allocated as a ‘catch-up week,’ allowing you time to digest your learnings so far and prepare for more aha moments in the coming modules!

Are you excited yet?
Module Four: Developing Guiding Questions and Identifying What Students Must Know and Do
In this module, Lois guides you through the process of writing three types of questions which scaffold thinking and encourage your students to develop their own conceptual understanding.

Questions are incredibly powerful in engaging students and respecting their intellect.

Next, Lynn shares with you some key points on articulating the Knowledge and Skills for your unit. This is the critical content of the unit which is required for grounding the generalizations.

This module is your chance to get going on the mapping out of your own questions, and continue with your generalizations.

Sounds pretty useful, right?
Module Five: Assessment
In this module, Dr. Erickson looks at the key components of Concept-Based Assessment and teaches you a little tip so you can quickly check if your assessment task is truly an assessment of understanding.

Finally, Dr. Lanning will talk about learning experiences and how we can teach inductively to support students in coming up with their own generalizations.

Your unit will be complete, and you will use our Unit Design Checklist before sharing your work in our Facebook group for peer feedback.

You will be so proud of yourself for finishing the course and gaining practical skills that you can apply in your classroom tomorrow.

BUT

You will only see the true impact of Concept-Based Curriculum and Instruction when you begin teaching, unlocking your students' potential and finding out what they are capable of.

AND

I can’t wait to give you some feedback in our private coaching call!
